How To Choose An Addiction Treatment Center

How to choose the right rehab addiction center.

Since substance abuse is, by its nature, a chemical dependency of the body.

Deciding to undergo drug rehabilitation treatment is a monumental step toward a healthier and happier life for anyone struggling with addiction. Rehab programs are designed to help an addict weather the difficulties of chemical detox as well as set you up for sobriety with methods for controlling cravings and avoiding relapse. If you or someone you know is suffering from a debilitating addiction, it’s important that you seek professional help to ensure the addiction goes away for good.

Before you decide to spend the money and time on a rehab program, do your homework to make sure it’s the best choice available to you. Here are some questions you should ask when evaluating potential rehab centers.

Is the Drug Rehab Facility Accredited?

The drug rehab center you’re considering should have an accreditation from a state or government agency, such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Private clinics can make many claims but an official accreditation indicates that the facility has been examined and evaluated based on common standards. Review the facility’s published success rates and read testimonials from patients who have undergone treatment. Typically, drug rehab centers have success rates of anywhere between 2% and 20%, but there are facilities that boast success rates of up to 75%.

Not all rehabs are built the same. Make sure you do thorough research before choosing one. They're expensive, but more importantly, you want the treatment to work.

How severe is the Addiction?

There’s a difference between an addict who is living on the streets due to a severe, uncontrollable meth addiction and an addict who isn’t living his life to the fullest because he smokes marijuana every day. This is not to say that more mild addictions are not important candidates for treatment, but addicts with a severe addiction problem, especially those who have tried to get treatment in the past but failed, are in much greater need of long-term, inpatient treatment programs that can provide the medical care, around-the-clock support, and comprehensive psychological counseling necessary to achieve sobriety and recovery. Make sure the clinic you’re considering has the tools and resources to provide treatment that fits the level of addiction you’re working to overcome.

How Experienced Are the Staff Members?

Just as you might shop around and do your homework before choosing a family doctor or experienced surgeon, it’s important to research the staff members at a potential rehab facility to find out how many years of experience they have as drug rehab counselors, whether or not they are properly certified, and the level of their education. Medical professionals with high marks and satisfied former patients will have a much higher success rate in treating your own addiction.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend?

An important factor to consider when evaluating drug rehab options is how much the facility charges for its programs and whether or not they accept insurance. If you can’t afford the high costs of certain private rehab facilities, there are state-funded treatment programs available. Some private treatment facilities offer financing options and monthly payment plans but you’ll have to be honest about what you and your family can afford. Most families will say no price is too high to help a loved on overcome an addiction but the financial realities will always be a factor in these decisions. Determine how much you’re able to spend and find drug treatment facilities in your budget range that provide the services you need.

What Type of Treatment Philosophy Resonates with You Most?

There are a variety of rehab programs to choose from these days. Some cater specifically to Christians, gay men, teens, and other demographics. Holistic treatment centers are becoming increasingly popular because they treat the whole person, rather than just addressing the symptoms of the addiction itself. To maximize your chances of a successful recovery, it pays to find a drug rehab program that resonates with your personal beliefs and individual situation. This is a place where you’ll be rediscovering yourself and bolstering your resolve for a better life. A program that suits your personality will better support you during this life-changing process.

What Types of Addiction Treatment Services Are Offered?

Addiction recovery is a varied process with several options and treatment methods available. Your unique treatment will depend on you and your addiction. Ensure that the facility you are considering offers the pieces that are right for you. Addiction treatment services that are commonly offered in drug rehab programs include the following:

  • Medical detoxification
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Follow-up treatment
  • Family intervention
  • Family counseling

If you have any special needs, make sure that you choose a drug rehab center that caters to them. For example, you may need to find an addiction treatment facility that prepares vegan or gluten free meals or offers dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental disorders. In order to ensure a successful recovery, do your research and find a treatment center that will work for you.
